Hack the Crisis

Technology has become a vital part in solving and handling the new world which we find ourselves in due to Covid-19. One example of an initiative aiming to develop technological concepts that can help solve problems arising because of Covid-19 is Hack the Crisis. We wanted to know more and talked to one of our UI/UX Designers, Sherif Ayman who participated in the hackathon arranged by the Swedish Government.

Why did you decide to be part of Hack the Crisis?
Covid-19 is affecting people, families and organizations all across the globe. As a designer that works with problem solving in my daily life, I have to take part of such an event to contribute in trying to solve this problem. I see it as part of our responsibility.

What challenge did you choose and what was your solution?
The #SaveLives challenge made me feel like I could make the most difference and impact people’s lives from what they or their loved ones may face. Staying at home to slow the spread of the virus is important. At the same time people need to go out to get life essentials and for their physical and mental wellbeing. Our solution aims to limit the spread of the virus by increasing the residents' knowledge of how the virus is spreading and when they need to act upon it.

What part do you think technology plays in solving the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic?
I think technology is already saving millions of lives while we speak by facilitating life essentials and increasing people’s tolerance of social distance by virtually connecting them. In addition, saving businesses as they still can operate, especially the ones that took part of early digital transformation. When it comes to ending the pandemic, I believe that AI and Machine learning can support in creating patterns, predictions and take the right decisions to limit and reduce the outbreak. Our task is to facilitate these technologies to save people's lives with the respect of their privacy, that’s our challenge of today.
